We get asked a lot, why tuning 15 years old cars is a bad idea. It is when without proper preparation. On the one hand, buying used performance cars that used to be very expensive but no any more, is a good solution for owners on a limited budget. On the other hand, you get what you pay for. The less you pay in buying the car, the more you will have to pay fixing it.The reasons that the Mini Cooper S R56 cost 30,000E in Greece band new in 2008 but only 8000E used in 2018 are age and wear. Engine wear is measured by operating hours and mileage.

Prior to tuning, it is absolutely necessary to prepare the car’s hardware. Load and fuel sensors, fuel pumps, injectors, timing system, thermostat, all must be replaced as a precaution, especially if they have exceeded their service life. This will increase your total bill for tuning. But will result in a reliable car that you will enjoy for a fraction of its original purchase price.

This Mini Cooper S R56 belongs to a good friend, who happened to buy it with very high mileage. Way beyond its intended product life. Now with a forged engine, hybrid turbo, upgraded cams, larger intercooler, full exhaust and a custom #etuners Stage4 ECU remap, performance rose to 300 hp from 175hp in stock form. It is not easy nor enjoyable to drive a 300-horsepower car daily, so we gave it map switching via the Sport button. In daily use, with the Sport off, the engine’s power output is limited to 220 hp.

In sport mode, the engine can enjoy 300+hp, driving on the mountains and hill climbs.
