Peugeot 207 1.6T RC/GT/GTi/THP/XS – Downpipe removal

How to remove the downpipe from Peugeot 207 1.6 Turbo

Removing the downpipe without removing the whole front of the car is tricky. There is very little space to reach and undo the bolts that secure the heat shields. But it is possible if you are careful. The photos below show how to do it!

Why would you want to do it? To remove the precat! A stock downpipe with the precat removed will perform equally well as an aftermarket downpipe with a sports cat.The precat is what hurts performance and increases backpressure in the stock exhaust assembly. It is that tiny cylindrical cat, next to the main cat on the downpipe.

The main catalytic converter is more than enough to pass emissions testing and not create backpressure.

There are two ways to do this: The textbook way, which means removing the whole front of the car to reach the engine. Or without doing so, which means you have to be very careful and things get a bit tight.

Steps required (it gets a bit difficult without removing the whole front of the car – radiator assembly etc)

  • Remove top turbo outlet pipe
  • Remove the small engine cover heatshield
  • Remove top lambda sensor
  • Remove the top turbo heat shield
  • Remove the lower heat shield
  • Remove the lower lambda sensor
  • Undo the retaining bolts from the downpipe to the turbo
  • Undo the retaining clip from the downpipe to the back of the exhaust

Can you please repost the pictures? I can only see the first one…
I’m having the same trouble now trying to swap the downpipe of my 207 RC for a new one with race kat.
    Thanks,
    Martin

      Thanks in advance!

After this mod, is it necessary to have ECU reprogrammed to prevent Engine Light or Depollution Issues as experienced with straight through downpipes?

Yes, a remap is required or you will get a warning light for lack of a cat converter. That is if your new downpipe is catless.

The last photo shows 2 cats, one a bit shorter. Is that the precat that is missing. Can the gti precat be cut out and fabrcated back together sucessfully.
