Peugeot 306 GTi Race 2.0 167hp – #Etuners Stage2 + cams 98RON

There is one legendary breed of 306 GTi. Race edition. Originally came with 167hp from Peugeot Sport. Do not let the fact it lacks air conditioning and modern amenities fool you. This car was designed to be the best GTi that the French maker ever produced.

Tuning a 20+ year old car is never easy. First a full mechanical inspection and restoration needs to be done, so that proper tuning can follow. Part of this process was rebuilding the engine with stock parts from scratch. The camshafts were upgraded and the fuel system completely replaced. Brand new fuel injectors of better specifications were installed and the fuel pump is now feeding the fuel rail via a single line – no return line or a fuel pressure regulator on the rail any more. Which was a safety feature car manufacturers started implementing after 2002. It helps limit the risk of leaks and fire by removing the return line to the tank. This, however, meant that the fueling strategy in the ecu had to be completely revisited and tuned from scratch.

Upgrade specifications

  • 98RON fuel
  • Upgraded fuel injectors and fuel system. Single fuel feed line – no return line with a fixed pressure regulator at the pump.
  • Upgraded camshafts (Stage1)
  • Upgraded exhaust
  • Upgraded cold air intake kit
  • Custom #Etuners Stage2 ECU remap on Magneti Marelli 1AP.10

Chipping process

The engine control unit was produced by Magneti Marelli and features a PLCC32 memory chip that hosts the ECU calibration and operating system. The safest way to remap it is to desolder the memory chip, back it up with an eeprom programmer. Then install a PLCC32 chip socket. Program a new chip with our tune. Install it and test on dyno. Then start reflashing the new chip that can now be removed from the socket again and again.

You can see the original PLCC32 memory chip under the grey silicone support for the capacitor in the middle of the photo above.

Chip is desoldered and the circuit board cleaner thoroughly. Then prepared for soldering the chip socket.

Chip socket soldered and in place, with the new memory chip programmed and in position, with our Stage2 remap.

Performance results

  • Maximum engine power: 188.5hp (measured as the car came to our shop at 148hp)
  • Maximum engine torque: 208.6Nm (measured as the car came to our shop at 178Nm)
