Any owner of a 207 THP will tell you that the 5speed gearbox needs a longer 5th gear. The 5th gear ratios on both 207 THP150 and THP175 are very short and not useful for good fuel efficiency.
Peugeot and Citroen fixed that problemyears later, by switching over to a 6-speed gearbox in facelift THP156 models, where 5th and 6th gears are overdrive. For everybody else, who has the models that were produced up to 2010 or a GTi/RC, the only reasonable solution is to upgrade the 5th gear set in the stock gearbox.

The good news is, it is an easy process. You do not have to remove your gearbox in order to do this. But you have to be careful because the gearbox will be opened from its service hatch, on the front left wheel side. It is strongly recommended that you renew your gearbox oil after this upgrade.

Options available for the upgrade

There are two gear sets available from Peugeot/Citroen, that can replace the stock one (BE type gearboxes have been manufactured for many many years and there are parts for them in every corner of this planet):

  1. 44-35 – PSA part code 2344.E2 (about 10% longer than stock)
  2. 47-35 – PSA part code 2344.F2 (about 15% longer than stock)
  3. 50-33 – PSA part code 2344.F5 (longest of the lot, comes from HDI gearboxes)

Supplemental PSA codes you might need to replace the gear set. It is a good idea to have them, you have to be really careful not to damage the safety nuts and clips while removing:

  1. 2304.81 nut and clip
  2. 2304.59 nut and clip
  3. 2339.33 internal bush

As the numbers imply, 50-33 is the longest while 44-35 is longer than stock but somehow intermediate. The 50-33 set is the longest of the lot by far and only recommended for highway travelling. We recommend 44-35 for THP150 (Peugeot 207 GT/Rallye/XS THP150) and then 47-35 or 50-33 for THP175 (Peugeot 207 RC/GTi THP175). This is because the THP175 has a shorter final drive ratio and all gears are shorter than the equivalent of THP150. THP150 has a longer final drive ratio, which makes all of its gears longer than THP175.

Of course you can use a 47-35 or 50-33 gear set on a THP150 if you want to have super low fuel consumption on the highway, at the cost of low rpm driveability and responsiveness.

In the following photos you can see how we did it on a 207:

Remove the front left wheel to get access to the gearbox service hatch

Remove the front left plastic wheel arch to get access to the gearbox service hatch

This is the new gear set, ready to go in! Old one going out.

Make sure you remove both gears, so the new set can be installed. Removing only one will not work, these work as a pair.

Longer 5th gear set, 47/35: 2344.F2 is the code you need from Peugeot. Note it down so you know what to order.

Remember: 2344.F2 is the 47-35 gear set (the longest of the lot) that fits really well to THP175 – Peugeot 207 RC/GTi.

This is it! Be advised, if your car is equipped with a Cruise control function, it will stop working. Because the new gear set needs to be calibrated into the Engine computer. The computer estimates the gear engages via rpm/speed correlation. It does not know the correct new gear ratio and it loses this, so the cruise control system stops working.

We correct this by remapping the car and calibrating the 5th gear ratio. Once it works, you can fully enjoy the lower fuel consumption and much more quiet operation during cruising with the new gear set. The difference makes this modification really worth it. It is typical to see consumption improvement of up to 1lt/100km, as the engine rpm is much lower (more than 600rpm)  at 120-130km/h on the highway.

    Excellent guide! Thank You.

But, what are the stock gear sets then? So that we could make a calculation how much longer are these in percentage.
I am also courious for a VTi gear set values if You know them.

Hi, do you know if the 2344.f6 will fit a 207 rc with be4 tranny? I found these gearset cheap online and apparently its a 2344.f2 replacement but not sure, thank you!

It looks like is the same, but you need both parts in the gear set described in the guide.

Hello. how you remap you’re ECU after change 5th gear ratio? I’ve Peugeot 308 1.6 vti and i also changed 5th gear ( was too short) but now cruise control not work. I’ ve lexia but do not know how fix this problem

      Hi

Did you solve problem with faulty cruise control after 5th gear change?

      • Stelios Alexandrakis Posted April 7, 2020 10:39 am

Of course, it needs remapping for the ECU to recognize the longer 5th gear set. Otherwise it does not work and it also loses auto-dampening during shifts, making shifting into 5th gear slam every time.

Just a question what happend with acceleration and top speed at 5th gear? how many you felt the change?

    • Stelios Alexandrakis Posted April 29, 2019 10:15 am

Almost all of the cars that we do the upgrade to are tuned. They have no issues accelerating in 5th gear, nor reaching their top speed. If your car is fully stock, it is hard to estimate how the gear change would affect its performance. The main reason for installing the gear set is to have better fuel efficiency, not to change the maximum speed – the 207 is not designed or meant to go at maximum speed anywhere.

HI I NEED HELP, MY (2344F4) 5th gear is damaged of a citroen c4 2.0 vts. gearbox number 20DM68 and i want to replace the whole gearbox with a 20DM58 From PEUGEOT 407 will this work out?. and my second option i want to replace the 5th gears with 50/33

    Hi.What about 206Rc 2004,does it fit?

    • Stelios Alexandrakis Posted September 2, 2019 8:51 pm

Since the 206RC uses a BE gearbox too, it is possible that the gear set will fit. However, we have not tested it combined with the 206RC final drive. The 207s have different final drive ratios compared to the 206RCs.

What power does be4 withstand on slicks with a good grip or do you need a swap of another gearbox for high power? maybe from 407 2.2?

I am building a high-performance turbo engine and I am interested in the tensile strength of the stock transmission and clutch

    • Stelios Alexandrakis Posted September 7, 2019 9:28 am

There are limitations to what the gearbox can take, in terms of torque. Once you have exceeded 400Nm, the 3rd gear set becomes very unreliable. Please bare in mind that the 407 was never meant to product that much torque either.

      • cjioh174 Posted September 13, 2019 12:11 am

What modification of be4 do you recommend?

I met information that diesel versions Gearbox 20 DM 73 is enhanced to 250 Nm?
        What is the truth?

I have a 207 1.6, and I’m wondering if this modification can be done on a non RC/GTI?

  • Matei Posted June 10, 2023 2:56 pm

Hello, can someone tell me if the modifications above can be also done on a Citroen c4 VTS 2.0?

    • Stelios Alexandrakis Posted July 1, 2023 2:01 pm

Unfortunately not. This modification only covers the 1.6 THP turbocharged models.
